Back Lane and Garage Pad Snow Clearing in Winnipeg

The ridge a lane plow leaves at your garage cleared, along with the pad and the approach, because the City leaves lane windrows to the homeowner.

Winnipeg Residential Snow Removal clears the ridge a lane plow leaves in front of your garage, along with the pad and the approach. The situation is easy to picture. The lane was plowed overnight, and now the garage door opens onto a frozen ridge of snow that runs the full width of your opening.

Whose job is the lane ridge?

The City of Winnipeg plows back lanes, but it leaves the ridge to you. In its snow FAQ, the City says it does not remove windrows left by back lane plowing operations, and that this is the homeowner’s responsibility. Lanes are maintained to a compacted snow surface, not bare pavement, so the ridge is dense from the start. The City also says lanes are usually cleared with rubber-tired front-end loaders.

For the rules on street and sidewalk ridges, see our windrow clearing page. The lane ridge is the one with no City backstop at all.

What does the City’s lane schedule mean for you?

The City plows a lane after about 5 cm of accumulation or drifting, and says a lane should be plowed within three days of the end of an average storm. Residential lanes are Priority 3 in the City’s system, and are typically cleared alongside priority 1 and 2 streets. That means a garage can sit blocked for a few days after a storm, and then be blocked again when the loader finishes its pass. We clear after the lane has been plowed, so the work is not undone an hour later.

What does a lane and pad visit include?

The job is smaller in footprint than a front drive and harder in snow quality. A visit covers:

  • The ridge across the opening. Broken through and moved clear of the garage door.
  • The garage pad or parking pad. Cleared to the width agreed at the quote.
  • The rear gate and walk. Included on request, so you can reach the house from the lane.

If your car leaves from the front, the front drive gets the same attention through our driveway snow clearing service.

Lane access in Transcona and St. Vital

Not every home has lane access, and we do not assume it. Before the first storm we confirm whether your car leaves by the front drive or the back lane, and plan around that. In Transcona, the central streets sit on narrow lots, according to the Manitoba Historical Society, so space to push snow is tight wherever the garage is. In St. Vital, the population grew mostly in the interwar and post-war decades, and we plan each property on its own layout.

After a big storm

A heavy storm can leave a lane ridge that has to be dealt with before anything else can move. When the whole property is buried, our emergency snow removal service covers the lane, the pad, the drive and the walk in one visit. If you want it handled every time, a seasonal contract puts the lane on our route.

Why does timing matter on a lane?

Lane snow can drift back into a cleared opening in a windy night, especially in the open stretches of a lane between garages. We time the visit for after the plow and after the wind settles where we can, and we leave the snow piled to the side of the opening, not in front of it. A seasonal plan means we return after each plow pass without a call from you.

Back Lane and Garage Pad Clearing Questions

Does the City clear the ridge a lane plow leaves at my garage?

No. The City's FAQ says it does not remove windrows left by back lane plowing and calls that the homeowner's responsibility. The only exception in its policy is an enhanced level of lane clearing for properties with no front street access. You can read it on the City's [snow FAQ](https://legacy.winnipeg.ca/publicworks/snow/snow-faq.stm).

When does the City plow back lanes?

Lanes are maintained to a compacted snow surface rather than bare pavement. The City plows after about 5 cm of accumulation or drifting, and says a lane should be plowed within three days of the end of an average storm. Residential lanes are Priority 3 in the City's system, typically cleared alongside priority 1 and 2 streets.

How much does back lane and garage pad clearing cost?

The price follows the width of the opening, the size of the pad, the depth of the ridge and how often you want visits. A single-car garage costs less than a double with a pad beside it. Our [cost guide](/blog/snow-removal-cost-winnipeg/) explains how the factors add up.

Should a 70-year-old shovel the lane ridge?

It is one of the harder jobs on a property. The ridge is dense, often frozen, and lifted in heavy blocks, so it is a poor job for anyone with heart or back concerns. Many older homeowners put it on a plan, and our page on [snow removal for seniors](/service/snow-removal-for-seniors/) explains how.

Do you clear the lane itself?

We clear your approach and the ridge across it, not the whole lane, which the City plows. If a neighbour's garage sits next to yours, we can quote both together.
