Emergency Snow Removal in Winnipeg
A big storm has buried the car and the front door. We clear the driveway, walk and windrow so you can get out.
Winnipeg Residential Snow Removal handles the morning after a big storm, when someone opens the door to a wall of snow and cannot see the car. The driveway is gone, the walk is gone and the plow has pushed a ridge across the end of the drive on its way past.
That is the day the usual plan falls apart. A shovel is not going to move this snow before work, and a call to a seasonal contractor may mean waiting in line.
What do we clear first after a big storm?
We start with whatever gets you moving. That means one lane of the driveway wide enough for the car, then the path to the front door. The rest of the property follows once those are open.
On a day like that, the work is done in this order:
- The car and the first lane. Enough driveway to get one vehicle out.
- The front walk and steps. So people and deliveries can get in and out.
- The end of the driveway. The ridge the plow left behind.
- The rest. Back walks, side gates, a second car’s space.
If you need a different order, tell us when you call. We can start with the back door if that is how the family leaves the house.
What is the plow ridge, and who clears it?
The ridge is called a windrow, and after a big storm it can be heavy and frozen solid. Under the City of Winnipeg’s snow FAQ, street crews remove windrows taller than 20 cm when they can. Ridges from sidewalk plowing and back lane plowing are the homeowner’s to clear.
Whichever plow left it, we clear it as part of an emergency visit. More on that is on our windrow clearing page.
What about homes outside the city?
Rural properties are hit harder by big storms, because the driveway is longer and the wind has more room to drift snow across it. In the RM of St. Andrews, the municipality’s public works page says mud roads get only disking and grading and no snow removal. A home on one may rely entirely on private clearing to get out. The same page says owners are expected to clear the residual ridge from the end of their own approach.
In Selkirk, we clear storm-blocked driveways the same way, lane first and the rest after. For the longer rural runs, our acreage and rural driveway plowing page explains how those jobs work.
How do you reach us, and when will we arrive?
Call or text with the address, what is blocked and whether anyone needs to leave soon, such as for a shift, an appointment or a medical visit. We will tell you honestly when we expect to get there. After a big storm everyone calls at once, and we would rather give you a straight answer than a promise we cannot keep.
You can call without being a customer. If you decide afterward that you want a plan, a seasonal snow removal contract puts you on the route before the next storm, and per-visit snow removal lets you keep calling only when you need us.
When is it not an emergency?
If the snow is light and you have time, the simpler path is a regular visit after the storm ends. Call it an emergency when the car cannot move, the front door will not open or somebody has to leave and cannot.
Get in touch, tell us what is blocked, and we will say what we can do and when.

Emergency Snow Removal Questions
Do you do emergency snow removal in Winnipeg?
Yes. If a storm has buried your car and your front door, call or text and we will tell you when we can reach you. Customers on a seasonal plan are on our route already, and we take emergency calls from other homeowners as capacity allows.
What is the easiest way to clear a driveway of heavy snow?
Take it in layers, working from the garage or car outward and moving the snow to the side. Do not try to lift a full shovel of wet snow, because it is heavy enough to hurt your back. If the job is too big, a crew with a blower will do it faster.
Can you clear snow if my driveway is full of cars?
We clear around what is there, but we cannot move a vehicle. The best fix is to have the car moved out of the way or tell us where it is parked, and we will clear to the edges and come back for the rest.
Should a 70-year-old be shovelling snow?
Heavy snow shovelling is hard on the heart and back at any age, and older adults are advised to take care. If you have health concerns, ask your doctor, and call us for the big storms. Our [snow removal for seniors](/service/snow-removal-for-seniors/) plans cover the full winter.
How much does emergency snow removal cost?
It depends on the depth of the snow, the size of the property and the time it takes. Our [cost guide](/blog/snow-removal-cost-winnipeg/) explains what drives the price, and we can quote before we start clearing.
