Sidewalk and Walkway Snow Clearing in Winnipeg

Front walks, steps and paths to the mailbox cleared first, with sanding available where packed snow turns to ice.

Winnipeg Residential Snow Removal clears front walks, steps and paths so the way to your door is as safe as the driveway. One mistake shows up often in Winnipeg winters. The driveway gets cleared because the car needs it, and the front steps are left with a layer of packed snow that nobody walks on until someone has to.

Why do the steps matter more than the driveway?

A driveway is wide, flat and used with a vehicle. A step is narrow, often shaded, and used on foot, which makes a thin skin of packed snow far more dangerous there than anywhere else on the property. Snow trodden down by a few trips to the mailbox turns to a slick sheet by evening. We clear walks and steps first on every visit for that reason, then move on to the drive.

What do we clear on a walkway visit?

The visit follows the way you actually move through the property. We clear the front walk and steps, then the paths people use every day:

  • The mailbox path. Clear to the box, not just to the curb.
  • The bins. A route to the garbage and recycling spots on collection days.
  • Side and back doors. Kept open in case the front door is not the way you come in.
  • Railings and landings. Checked for snow and ice, where footing is the worst.

Where a walk crosses an approach that a plow has ridged over, we clear that too. Our windrow clearing page explains why that ridge lands there.

What happens when a thaw turns the walk to ice?

Clearing takes the snow away, but a walk that has melted and refrozen needs more than a shovel. Sand gives grip on the surface that is left. We add sanding and ice control to a walkway plan on request, and it is usually worth having on steps that face north or sit in shade.

Walkways in Charleswood

Charleswood earned its nickname, “The Suburb Beautiful,” back in the 1930s. Neighbourhoods such as Roblin Park, Varsity View, Marlton and Ridgedale are among those we serve. Whatever the house, we walk the property before the first storm and note which paths matter.

Who clears the public sidewalk in front of the house?

The City plows many public sidewalks, but the ridge that plow leaves across your own walk or approach is not removed. The City’s council policy says windrows pushed across private approaches and walks by sidewalk clearing shall not be removed. That ridge is part of our visit, so the walk is open from the street to the door.

Help for older homeowners

For someone older, the front walk is the most important part of the job. A seniors’ plan clears it first and keeps clearing it after every snowfall. Read about snow removal for seniors if you are setting this up for yourself or a parent. Homeowners who can shovel but not on every storm can use per-visit snow removal for the heavy ones.

How often should a walkway be cleared?

After every snowfall that leaves a layer on the ground, and again after a thaw if the surface has glazed. A walk that stays covered gets trodden into ice, and ice is much harder to remove than fresh snow. A seasonal plan keeps the walk on the same schedule as the driveway so the steps never wait for the next storm.

Sidewalk and Walkway Clearing Questions

What is the best tool for clearing a sidewalk?

A wide, flat pusher for fresh snow, and an ice scraper or a flat spade for packed layers on steps. A shovel full of wet snow is heavy to lift, so pushing and tossing short distances is easier on the back. Past a few centimetres of packed snow, hand tools stop being the right answer, which is when most homeowners call us.

Where can seniors in Winnipeg get help clearing a walk?

Most arrange it privately. The City's accessibility program clears only a 1.5 m path across the boulevard for residents with accessibility needs, requires a medical certificate for new applicants, and excludes properties with a front driveway. You can read the [City's program page](https://legacy.winnipeg.ca/publicworks/snow/boulevard-access.stm) for the full conditions.

How much does walkway clearing cost?

The price follows the length of the walk, the number of steps, how many paths need clearing and how often you want visits. A single front walk costs less than a front walk, side path and rear steps together. Our [cost guide](/blog/snow-removal-cost-winnipeg/) explains how each factor changes the quote.

Do you sand the steps after clearing?

Yes, sanding can be added. Snow packed on steps melts in the afternoon and refreezes overnight, and sand gives footing that clearing alone does not.

Can you clear the path to the mailbox and the garbage bins?

Yes. We note every path in use when we walk the property, and the mailbox, bins and side door go on the list with the front walk.
