Snow Hauling in Winnipeg
Snow loaded and trucked off the property when the piles have taken over stalls, sightlines and loading areas, so the site can work again.
Winnipeg Residential Snow Removal hauls snow off properties once the piles have run out of room. Every plowed lot, yard and long driveway builds banks along its edges, and by midwinter those banks are taller than a parked car, covering stalls, blocking drivers’ sightlines and crowding the loading area.
At that point more plowing only makes the piles bigger. The snow has to leave, and the property manager has to know before the next storm where it is going and who is taking it.
What is the difference between plowing and hauling?
Plowing pushes snow from the work area into a pile. Hauling takes the pile and removes it from the property. A site that is plowed well but never hauled eventually loses its parking, then its aisles, then its safe exits.
We plan for both. The stacking areas for parking lot plowing are chosen with a haul in mind, so that the crew can load the piles without tearing up the lot or the landscaping.
How does a haul work?
A haul has several moving parts. A loader or blower fills the trucks, the trucks carry the snow to a dump site and the crew sweeps up what falls off the pile. On a busy site the work is done at night or early in the morning, when the lot is empty.
The pile does not have to be removed all at once. Some properties haul only the worst banks, such as the ones at the exits, and leave the rest until spring. We note this on the walk so the manager can choose what to do first.
What drives the cost of hauling?
Price depends on the volume of snow, how far the trucks travel, how many pieces of equipment the job needs and whether it has to happen overnight. A narrow strip along a fence is a small haul. A full lot with banks on three sides is a large one. Our cost guide goes through the factors, and we quote the haul after seeing the pile.
Hauling in North Kildonan and nearby
North Kildonan began in 1925 as a rural municipality of farmland and market gardens, and it amalgamated into Winnipeg in 1972. Its named neighbourhoods include Rivergrove, Riverbend, Valhalla and the McLeod Industrial area, so the work there ranges from older residential lots to industrial yards. Industrial yards pile up a lot of snow over a season, which is where hauling earns its place.
Which properties book hauling?
Commercial lots, medical and dental clinics, multi-unit residential buildings, industrial yards and the odd large residential lot all call for it. The ones that fare best decide on a plan in autumn. The hub for that planning is commercial snow clearing, where hauling sits next to plowing and walks in one written scope.
Multi-unit properties are covered separately under condo and apartment snow removal, since the piles there have to stay clear of resident stalls and entrances.
Can the piles be left until spring?
Sometimes. A pile in a corner away from traffic and drainage can sit until it melts. A pile that blocks sightlines, covers a catch basin or sits against a building wall cannot. Meltwater from a large bank also floods low areas in April, so hauling can protect the pavement as much as the access.
Check the piles before they become a problem
A pile is easiest to deal with while it is still a pile and not a wall of ice. Tell us the address and how many storms the stacking areas have taken so far. We will walk the site, mark what has to go and quote the haul.

Snow Hauling Questions
What is snow hauling?
Snow hauling is the loading of piled snow into trucks and removing it from the property. It differs from plowing, which only moves snow from one place on the lot to another. Hauling is what you need when the piles have used up all the available space.
When does a property need snow hauling?
When the banks are tall enough to block sightlines, take stalls out of use or leave nowhere to stack the next storm. Many properties reach that point in January or February after several heavy snowfalls. A walk of the site shows how close you are.
Can you haul snow from a residential property?
Yes, some residential properties have no room left after the plow and the shovel have done their work, such as a narrow lot with a long drive. We assess each one on site. For ordinary driveways, snow is usually moved to the edges instead.
What drives the cost of snow hauling?
The volume of snow, the distance to the dump site, the number of trucks and loaders needed and whether the work has to be done at night. We quote after seeing the piles, and our cost guide explains the factors.
Do I have to book hauling in advance?
Booking ahead helps, because a heavy winter makes hauling busy and trucks are limited. A property with a plan in place before the first storm is easier to fit in than one that calls after a storm.
